China Plans Major Biodiversity Conservation Projects
Hainan, The Gulf Observer: China is formulating a comprehensive plan to implement major biodiversity conservation projects, underscoring the nation’s commitment to this crucial endeavor. Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu announced this initiative during an event in the southern island province of Hainan to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity on Wednesday.
This year’s global theme for the International Day for Biological Diversity is “Be part of the Plan,” reflecting the collective responsibility to protect and sustain biodiversity.
“As a country with high levels of biodiversity and as one of the first signatories and ratifiers of the Convention on Biological Diversity, China has always placed high value on biodiversity conservation,” Minister Huang stated.
China is dedicated to continuously enhancing its legal framework, regulations, and mechanisms for biodiversity protection. Efforts to strengthen these systems are ongoing to ensure the robust protection of the country’s diverse ecosystems and species.
According to official data, 90 percent of terrestrial ecosystem types and 74 percent of populations of key protected wildlife species at the national level are currently under effective protection in China. These statistics highlight the country’s significant progress in safeguarding its natural heritage.
Moreover, China is actively fostering international cooperation and contributing to global biodiversity governance. As the host and president of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), China led the successful adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022.
Minister Huang, who continues to serve as the COP15 president, urged developed countries to honor their commitments by significantly increasing their support for developing countries in terms of funding, technology transfer, and capacity-building. Such support is essential for the comprehensive, balanced, and effective implementation of the global biodiversity framework.
China’s initiatives and leadership in biodiversity conservation signal its dedication to protecting the planet’s biological diversity and promoting sustainable development worldwide.
