Azerbaijan Highlights Multiculturalism and Interfaith Dialogue at International Conference in Cairo

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan has reaffirmed its commitment to multiculturalism, interfaith dialogue, and combating Islamophobia during the second International Conference to Combat Discrimination Against Islam and Muslims, held in Cairo under the theme “Muslim Communities in the West and Their Role in Confronting Islamophobia.”

Addressing the conference, Azerbaijan’s representative Ravan Hasanov said multiculturalism remains a key pillar of Azerbaijan’s state policy. He noted that the Constitution guarantees equal rights for all citizens regardless of religion, ethnicity, or language, while fostering an environment in which diverse religious communities coexist peacefully in a spirit of mutual respect.

Hasanov highlighted Azerbaijan’s continued efforts to promote multiculturalism and interreligious dialogue through a range of local and international initiatives. He said the country has consistently implemented projects aimed at combating Islamophobia, countering religious intolerance, and promoting the values of tolerance among younger generations.

He also underscored the significance of the international conferences on Islamophobia organized annually in Baku since 2023, describing them as important platforms that have contributed to advancing global dialogue and international cooperation in addressing religious discrimination and intolerance.

On the sidelines of the conference, Hasanov held talks with Ahmed Nabawi, Secretary-General of Egypt’s Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. The two officials discussed expanding international cooperation to combat Islamophobia, religious discrimination, and hate speech, while exploring opportunities to strengthen interfaith dialogue and implement joint initiatives in these areas.

As part of the visit, Hasanov also delivered a lecture titled “Azerbaijan’s Model of Multiculturalism and the Experience of Interfaith Dialogue” to staff members of the Foreign Relations Department of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, highlighting Azerbaijan’s experience in promoting religious harmony and peaceful coexistence.

The conference brought together officials, scholars, and experts to exchange views on tackling Islamophobia and strengthening the role of Muslim communities in promoting mutual understanding, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence worldwide.
