Brunei Sultan Highlights Faith, Economic Resilience, and Inclusive Growth in New Year’s Address

Bandar Seri Begawan, The Gulf Observer: His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, emphasized the nation’s strong foundation in faith as the key to its resilience amidst global uncertainties during his New Year’s Day titah aired yesterday evening.

The monarch reaffirmed that Brunei’s unwavering religious principles ensure peace and security for future generations. He also expressed confidence in the nation’s youth, citing their role in driving Brunei’s progress through education and skills development.

Economic Resilience and Diversification

Addressing economic performance, His Majesty noted Brunei’s commendable resilience in a challenging global environment. He cited forecasts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), projecting growth between 2.5% and 2.9% for 2025.

“Our economy has shown strength, driven by growth across various sectors,” His Majesty remarked, adding that efforts to diversify beyond traditional industries, particularly into non-oil sectors, have borne fruit.

The Sultan highlighted government initiatives to attract high-quality Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and foster small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), ensuring sustained economic progress. He also underscored the importance of developing local human capital through education and industry-aligned skills training.

Commitment to International Cooperation

His Majesty reiterated Brunei’s active engagement in regional and global affairs, particularly through ASEAN and the United Nations (UN). Brunei’s contributions to counterterrorism, international law, and regional development reflect its commitment to fostering international cooperation.

“We must leverage opportunities for growth and collaboration in the global arena, building on our strong diplomatic relationships for mutual benefit,” His Majesty stated.

Inclusive Development for All Citizens

The Sultan stressed the importance of inclusive development, ensuring that progress benefits all sectors of society, especially the vulnerable. His Majesty called for collaboration between public and private sectors to achieve equitable growth.

“We must ensure that no one is left behind. Inclusive development remains central to our national priorities,” he emphasized.
