Thousands March Through Istanbul in Solidarity with Palestine
Istanbul, The Gulf Observer: Istanbul witnessed a massive demonstration on New Year’s Day as hundreds of thousands gathered for a large-scale event organised by the Türkiye Youth Foundation (TÜGVA) under the theme “Awakening the World.” The march aimed to highlight solidarity with Palestine and draw attention to the ongoing plight of Gaza and Jerusalem.
March Begins at Aya Sofya Grand Mosque
The demonstration began in the early hours, with participants assembling at the Aya Sofya Grand Mosque following the morning prayer. Bearing the slogan, “Our destination is Galata Bridge,” the crowd set out for the iconic bridge in a display of unity and support for Palestine. Many wore keffiyehs and carried placards with messages such as “Jerusalem is ours,” “Gaza: Where Children Don’t Grow Up,” and “Jerusalem is under occupation.”
Chants and Symbolic Gestures
Throughout the march, participants chanted slogans like “Murderer Israel will be held accountable,” “Martyrs never die,” and “From Istanbul to Al-Aqsa, a thousand salutes to the resistance.” Some lit torches, adding a dramatic visual element to the demonstration.
Security and Hospitality at Galata Bridge
Upon reaching the Galata Bridge, demonstrators passed through police checkpoints to access the designated gathering area. Security forces maintained heightened vigilance around key sites, including mosques and the bridge, to ensure public safety. Meanwhile, aid organisations provided refreshments, including tea, simit, and soup, to support the large crowds.
Calls for Action and Solidarity
The event underscored Türkiye’s historical and cultural connection to Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque. Participants urged greater international awareness and decisive action in support of the Palestinian cause, emphasizing the shared heritage and responsibility to protect Jerusalem’s sanctity.
This large-scale gathering reflects the enduring resonance of the Palestinian issue within Turkish society and highlights the nation’s calls for justice and peace in the region.
