Czechia Backs Higher NATO Defence Spending, Stronger Support for Ukraine Ahead of The Hague Summit

Czechia

Prague, The Gulf Observer: As NATO prepares for its upcoming summit in The Hague on June 24–25, Czechia has declared firm support for deeper defence commitments, greater military aid to Ukraine, and enhanced cooperation with democratic allies in the Indo-Pacific.

According to a statement from the Czech President’s Office on Tuesday, defence and deterrence will be central themes at the summit. Czechia emphasized the need for the alliance to reaffirm long-term support for Ukraine and identified Russia as the most serious direct threat to the Euro-Atlantic area.

Czechia is prepared to support raising NATO’s defence spending target to 3.5% of GDP, including an additional 1.5% for related military investments. This move marks a significant step beyond NATO’s current 2% guideline.

The country also advocates for a stronger NATO role in coordinating military assistance to Ukraine, reflecting Czechia’s continued commitment to Kyiv’s defence against Russian aggression.

Additionally, Prague supports deeper ties between NATO and democratic countries in the Indo-Pacific region, seeing strategic alignment between NATO and the European Union as a top priority for global security.

President Petr Pavel will lead the Czech delegation to the summit, joined by Defence Minister Jana Černochová, Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka, and National Security Advisor Tomáš Pojar.

The summit is expected to set a stronger course for NATO’s strategic posture amid rising global tensions and increased threats to European security.
