The far-right rioters, organized by groups including the anti-Muslim and xenophobic English Defense League, gathered in the city centre starting in the early afternoon. These groups had mobilized through social media platforms and messaging apps.

Simultaneously, a counter-protest organized by anti-racism platforms also took place in the city centre. Tensions escalated, leading to skirmishes between the two sides. Several police officers were wounded during the clashes, and a police van was damaged.

The ongoing violence has prompted a significant police response. According to the latest figures, more than 400 people have been arrested across the country over the past several days for their involvement in the violent riots.
