Azerbaijan, UK Discuss Expanding Strategic Cooperation Across Key Sectors

Baku, The Gulf Observer: President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received Lord Anas Sarwar, UK Minister of State for Trade at the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade and Co-Chair of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission, on Tuesday.

During the meeting, Lord Anas Sarwar conveyed a letter from Andy Burnham, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, to President Ilham Aliyev, emphasizing the British Prime Minister’s importance attached to the dynamically developing long-term cooperation with Azerbaijan.

President Ilham Aliyev expressed his appreciation to the UK Prime Minister for the letter.

Lord Anas Sarwar, in turn, conveyed the United Kingdom’s intention to further expand cooperation with Azerbaijan across various areas.

President Ilham Aliyev noted that active cooperation has developed between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom, emphasizing that the two countries have maintained close partnership since Azerbaijan restored its independence.

The sides also recalled the recent visit of UK Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence Lord Vernon Coaker to Azerbaijan. They noted that the growing number of high-level official visits between the two countries in recent years demonstrates the strategic importance attached to bilateral relations.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of the 8th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation between the Governments of Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom, held in Baku.

The participants noted that the commission meeting provided an important platform for discussing a broad range of issues on the bilateral economic agenda and identifying new areas for cooperation.

During the discussions, the sides exchanged views on prospects for cooperation in energy, trade and the economy, business, security, defense industry, data centers, artificial intelligence, agriculture and education, as well as other areas of mutual interest.

The meeting underscored the shared interest of Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom in further deepening bilateral relations and developing mutually beneficial cooperation across emerging and strategic sectors.
