Hanoi Approves Ambitious Plan for Zero-Emission Bus Fleet by 2035

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: In a landmark move toward sustainable public transportation, the capital city of Hanoi has approved a comprehensive plan to transition to a zero-emission bus fleet by 2035. This decision marks a significant step in the city’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance air quality.

The approved plan, which was finalized on Thursday, outlines a phased approach to phasing out diesel buses in favor of electric ones. Between 2026 and 2030, Hanoi aims for an equal mix of electric buses (50 percent) and buses powered by cleaner-burning fuels like liquefied natural gas (LNG) or compressed natural gas (CNG) (50 percent). The estimated financial investment for this transition is VNĐ43 trillion (US$1.79 billion).

A key aspect of the plan is the prioritization of electrifying buses operating within the central urban areas (within Ring Road 4). Additionally, new bus routes will be designed with a focus on using electric and green energy vehicles, further promoting environmentally friendly public transportation options.

By 2030, it is anticipated that a significant portion (70-90 percent) of the existing diesel bus fleet will be replaced with clean energy alternatives. This transition will set the stage for the final phase between 2031 and 2035, during which all buses operating in the city will go electric, culminating in a fully zero-emission bus fleet for Hanoi.

This ambitious plan underscores Hanoi’s commitment to sustainability and its proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges. The move is expected to not only improve air quality but also set a precedent for other cities in the region to follow.
