Indonesia Pledges Increased Financial Support to UNRWA

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia has announced its commitment to significantly increase its financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The Indonesian government will enhance its regular voluntary contributions by US$1.2 million per year starting in 2024, reflecting its concrete support for the agency’s crucial work with Palestinian refugees.
In a written statement released on Sunday, July 14, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed this new commitment. The announcement was made by the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN, Ambassador Armanatha Nasir, during the UNRWA “Pledging Conference” at the UN Headquarters in New York on July 12.
In addition to the increased annual contributions, Indonesia has pledged a US$2 million grant to aid in meeting the needs outlined in the “UNRWA Flash Appeal” from April to December 2024.
“Indonesia also expressed its commitment to seeking innovative funding for UNRWA, including involving the Indonesian community through exploring partnerships with zakat management institutions,” the ministry stated.
The “Pledging Conference” aimed to garner additional financial contributions to support UNRWA’s mandate of serving 5.9 million Palestinian refugees across Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
The conference, opened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, saw UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis emphasizing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, the urgent need for a ceasefire, and adherence to international law.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, in his briefing, outlined the operational challenges faced by the agency and appealed for political support from the international community to ensure the continuation of its vital work.
Representatives from 62 countries attended the conference, expressing their recognition and support for UNRWA’s role in aiding the Palestinian people and contributing to regional security. They also called for an end to the conflict and urged Israel to cease obstructing UNRWA’s operations in the Gaza region.
This commitment from Indonesia underscores its ongoing dedication to supporting international humanitarian efforts and providing essential aid to Palestinian refugees.
