Indonesian Ombudsman to Strengthen Oversight of Social Assistance Programs

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The Indonesian Ombudsman has announced plans to enhance its supervision of social assistance programs to ensure their accuracy and tangible benefits for recipients. Ombudsman member Hery Susanto made the statement in a press release on Sunday.

“Moving forward, the Indonesian Ombudsman will strengthen supervision of the implementation of social assistance programs,” Susanto stated during a charity event at Endan Andansih Mosque in Purwakarta, West Java, on Saturday.

He emphasized that the Ombudsman plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency and effectiveness in the distribution of social aid, as mandated by its function and authority. He also underscored the state’s obligation to protect vulnerable groups, citing Article 34, Paragraph 1 of the 1945 Constitution.

“The Indonesian Ombudsman supports the implementation of social policies to ensure that eligible recipients receive their rightful assistance,” he said.

However, Susanto stressed that alleviating poverty cannot be the sole responsibility of the government but requires collective efforts from the community, social organizations, and businesses.

He further highlighted that the charity event provided an opportunity to strengthen social solidarity during the holy month of Ramadan, particularly by supporting the poor and orphans. He encouraged a broader commitment to social responsibility beyond religious observance, aligning with Islamic principles of zakat (alms), infak (donations), and sedekah (voluntary charity).

“Personal piety is important, but social piety will make it perfect. The Indonesian Ombudsman appreciates this event as it aligns with the values of Pancasila (Indonesia’s national ideology),” he concluded.
