Kazakhstan and EU Discuss Enhanced Cooperation in Digital Transformation and Connectivity
Astana, The Gulf Observer: Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Roman Vassilenko met with Peteris Ustubs, Director for the Middle East, Asia, and Pacific at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships, to discuss furthering Kazakh-European cooperation, the Kazakh MFA reported. Key topics included advancing digital transformation, regional connectivity, and expanding transport and logistics links.
Deputy Minister Vassilenko highlighted the positive momentum in political relations between Kazakhstan and the EU and emphasized the importance of deepening collaboration on shared priorities. Commending the Team Europe Initiative on Digital Connectivity, Vassilenko noted its role in promoting Central Asia’s digital economy by providing reliable satellite-based internet, especially in rural areas.
The officials underscored the significance of Kazakhstan’s active engagement in the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) and discussed ongoing efforts to develop this crucial corridor. Both sides agreed on the value of continued cooperation in digital and logistical frameworks to enhance economic and regional integration.
The Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between Kazakhstan and the EU, covering 29 areas such as trade, investment, and infrastructure, has fostered extensive collaboration. In 2023, bilateral trade reached $41.4 billion, a 3.5% increase from the previous year. European investments in Kazakhstan have totaled $180 billion since 2005, with over 3,000 EU companies, including major firms like Shell, Eni, and Siemens, operating in Kazakhstan.
The EU’s Global Gateway initiative, with €300 billion in funding, aims to support infrastructure projects in Kazakhstan, particularly in developing the TITR. This ongoing partnership highlights Kazakhstan and the EU’s commitment to innovation and regional connectivity.
