Severe Weather Wreaks Havoc Across the UK as Flood Warnings Surge
London, The Gulf Observer: Over 100 flood warnings were issued across the United Kingdom on New Year’s Day, with Greater Manchester declaring a major incident as severe wind and rain caused widespread disruption, the media reported on Wednesday.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that several residents were trapped in their homes without access to running water, while emergency services rescued individuals stranded in vehicles submerged in floodwaters.
The Environment Agency (EA) has issued 109 flood warnings across England, with the majority affecting the North West region. In addition, 11 flood warnings remain active in north Wales, while Scotland is contending with 17 active warnings.
Weather conditions are set to deteriorate further, with forecasters predicting a sharp drop in temperatures overnight. Snowfall is expected over the weekend, compounding challenges for communities already grappling with flooding.
The adverse weather follows New Year’s Eve celebrations marred by cancellations across the country due to safety concerns. Despite this, major events in Manchester and London proceeded as planned.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and heed weather advisories, as conditions are expected to remain hazardous in the coming days.
