UAE Participates in G20 Ministerial Session on Energy and Climate Action in Brazil

Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: The United Arab Emirates (UAE), represented by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), actively participated in the G20 Ministerial Session held in the Republic of Brazil. The high-level meeting focused on fostering collaboration among G20 member nations and addressing key opportunities and challenges in the energy sector, with a particular emphasis on climate action.

During the session, Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to a just, orderly, and equitable energy transition, in line with the principles outlined in the UAE Consensus. Al Olama emphasized the country’s proactive stance in supporting the global energy transition through innovation, sustainability, and international collaboration.

On the sidelines of the G20 discussions, Al Olama participated in several high-level sessions, including the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and Mission Innovation (MI) Dialogue. In these forums, he highlighted the critical role of innovation and international partnerships in reshaping the energy landscape to meet climate goals. He underscored the UAE’s efforts to promote the use of cutting-edge technologies in achieving sustainable energy solutions.

Al Olama also took part in the Unlocking Future Fuels Ministerial Session, where he showcased the UAE Energy Strategy 2050. The strategy commits the UAE to tripling its renewable energy capacity by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. He reinforced the UAE’s dedication to driving the global energy transition through ambitious investments in clean energy, which include AED 160 billion already invested and plans to invest an additional AED 500 billion over the next three decades.

In his role as co-leader of the third ministerial meeting of the Hydrogen International Trade Forum (IHTF), Al Olama engaged with representatives from countries supporting cross-border hydrogen trade. The discussions focused on advancing the development of hydrogen markets and expanding trade opportunities for hydrogen and its derivatives.

Additionally, he participated in a session titled “Moving the Fuels of the Future, Production and Transportation Aligned?”, where he outlined the UAE’s initiatives to support the production of hydrogen-based fuels and sustainable biofuels, particularly for the maritime and aviation sectors.

In another session, “Keep Cool: Deploying Highly Efficient, Innovative Cooling Technologies,” Al Olama addressed the challenges posed by energy consumption in the cooling sector, highlighting innovative solutions to mitigate climate impacts.

Commenting on his participation, Al Olama stated, “These meetings provide valuable opportunities to align visions, exchange experiences, and strengthen partnerships with like-minded countries. The UAE is a key player in the global energy market, focusing on its role as a leading supplier of renewable energy, particularly low-emission hydrogen.”

He added, “We are confident that collaboration between the UAE and other G20 members will help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), drive collective climate action, and accelerate the energy transition.”

Al Olama also noted the UAE’s significant progress in clean energy, with current renewable capacity standing at 6 GW and nuclear energy capacity at 5.6 GW. By 2030, the UAE’s clean energy capacity is projected to reach 19.8 GW, further solidifying its leadership in the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
