UNHRC Adopts Morocco-Led Resolution Promoting Women in Diplomacy

Mrirt, The Gulf Observer: The United Nations Human Rights Council has adopted a landmark resolution titled “Women, Diplomacy and Human Rights” during its 58th session, marking a pivotal step toward strengthening female participation in international diplomacy and human rights advocacy.

Spearheaded by Morocco, the resolution received strong backing from a cross-regional coalition of countries, including Chile, Maldives, Mauritius, Mexico, Slovenia, and Spain. The move underscores a growing global consensus on the vital role of women in decision-making processes and multilateral forums.

Morocco’s National Human Rights Council (CNDH) welcomed the adoption, with its President Amina Bouayach — who also chairs the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions — describing the resolution as a “renewed collective commitment to women’s participation in decision-making, enabling their full, equal, and safe involvement in international diplomatic work.”

Bouayach, speaking during the International Day of Women in Diplomacy celebrations in Geneva in June 2024, emphasized the essential role women play in defending human rights globally. “Women’s participation in diplomatic work is not merely a legitimate right, but essential for ensuring comprehensive defense of human rights,” she said.

The resolution reflects growing international efforts to mainstream gender equality within the realm of diplomacy and reaffirms the importance of inclusive representation in shaping global human rights discourse.
