US, Morocco Conclude Second Plenary of Global Forum on Preventing Radiological and Nuclear Terrorism

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: The United States and Morocco have announced the successful conclusion of the second plenary meeting of the Global Forum to Prevent Radiological and Nuclear Terrorism, held in Rabat from February 3 to 5.
In a joint statement issued by the US Department of State and Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two sides underscored that the forum reflects their shared commitment to protecting citizens from potential radiological and nuclear threats and safeguarding economic stability from the disruptive impact of such incidents.
The forum urged participating countries to pool resources and expertise to prevent malicious actors from exploiting radiological and nuclear materials, emphasizing the importance of collective action to protect international security and economic resilience.
Over the three-day meeting, experts from around the world engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges aimed at strengthening international cooperation to prevent, detect, and respond to radiological and nuclear terrorism.
A key highlight of the forum was a counter–radiological and nuclear terrorism demonstration coordinated by Morocco’s Interior Ministry. The exercise simulated a multi-agency response to a radiological incident, allowing participants to test crisis decision-making processes and practice interagency coordination.
The joint statement also announced that South Korea will host the third plenary meeting of the forum in 2027, reflecting growing international momentum to address radiological and nuclear terrorism and reinforcing the forum’s principle of shared responsibility among its members.
The meeting followed Morocco’s recent achievement of the highest level of assurance from the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding its compliance with nuclear safeguards. The Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security confirmed that this milestone—achieved for the first time by the country—verifies that all nuclear material in Morocco is used exclusively for peaceful purposes.
