Morocco Signs Landmark Agreement to Revitalize Essaouira Museum and Strengthen Cultural Heritage

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art hosted the signing of a major partnership agreement aimed at enhancing the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Museum, marking a significant step in strengthening Morocco’s cultural infrastructure.
The agreement brings together key national and local stakeholders, including the National Museums Foundation, the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, the Essaouira Mogador Association, and the Essaouira Municipal Council. The initiative focuses on the development, modernization, equipping, and management of the historic museum, reinforcing its cultural and institutional role.
The accord was signed by Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication Mehdi Bensaid, President of the Essaouira Mogador Association André Azoulay, President of the Essaouira Municipal Council Tarik Ottmani, and President of the National Museums Foundation Mehdi Qotbi.
Speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony, Tarik Ottmani highlighted the historical significance of Essaouira, noting that its heritage dates back to the Phoenician era. He emphasized that the agreement will enable the comprehensive rehabilitation of the museum, allowing it to reopen with upgraded facilities and an enriched cultural experience for visitors.
The 19th-century museum is set to be transformed into a dynamic space dedicated to education, cultural discovery, and heritage appreciation. The initiative also aims to promote both tangible and intangible cultural assets, further solidifying Essaouira’s standing as a prominent cultural destination in Morocco.
Officials underscored that the agreement forms part of broader national efforts to preserve and promote cultural heritage, with similar initiatives expected to expand to other historical sites across the country.
