Wang Yi Warns Hamas Chief’s Assassination Threatens Gaza Ceasefire Talks
Beijing, The Gulf Observer: China’s senior diplomat, Wang Yi, has condemned the recent assassination of Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, calling it an act that “seriously violates” fundamental norms governing international relations and potentially jeopardizes ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.
Wang Yi, who is a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and serves as China’s foreign minister, made these remarks during a telephone conversation with Iranian Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri on Sunday.
Haniyeh was killed by Israel on July 31 in Tehran while visiting Iran for the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian. The assassination has sparked international concern, with Wang Yi emphasizing China’s firm opposition and condemnation of the act.
Wang stressed the importance of the international community uniting to urge all parties involved in the conflict to implement relevant Security Council resolutions. He highlighted the need to create conditions for a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in Gaza as a top priority.
In response, Bagheri expressed gratitude for China’s objective stance on the issue and expressed hope that China would play a more prominent role in mediating the situation in Gaza and promoting security in the Middle East.
Wang Yi also discussed advancing cooperation with Iran across various sectors, aiming to bring new prospects to the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations. He affirmed that China would continue to work closely with the new Iranian government, providing firm support on issues concerning each other’s core interests.
