Masdar’s One-Gigawatt Wind Farm Project in Kazakhstan Marks a Milestone for Renewable Energy Development
Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company Masdar has entered into an agreement with several key partners to develop a one-gigawatt wind farm in Kazakhstan’s Jambyl region. This landmark initiative is Masdar’s first project in the Central Asian country and is set to become a major contributor to its clean energy landscape.
The wind farm will be complemented by a 600-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, ensuring greater reliability and efficiency in the energy supply. Masdar is leading the project alongside W Solar, Qazaq Green Power (part of the Samruk-Kazyna Group), and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund as co-developers.
Construction is projected to begin in the first quarter of 2026. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to power approximately 300,000 homes in southern Kazakhstan and reduce carbon emissions by 2 million tonnes annually.
This project is a pivotal step towards achieving Kazakhstan’s energy goals of increasing its renewable energy capacity to 15% of the total supply by 2030, with a longer-term aim of 50% by 2050, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The collaboration underscores Masdar’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy footprint and supporting global energy transitions.
