Myanmar’s Taninthayi Region Approves 15 New Hotel Projects Amid Tourism Growth Surge

Yangon, The Gulf Observer: Taninthayi Region is witnessing a promising surge in tourism development, with 15 new hotel construction projects receiving advance approval during the Taninthayi Region Tourism Coordination Meeting 3/2025 held in June. Alongside this, authorities issued licences for 17 new hospitality establishments, including hotels and high-standard guesthouses, in a significant boost to the regional tourism sector.
According to the Taninthayi Region Tourism Committee, the latest approvals include 14 hotel licences and three high-standard guesthouse licences. In addition, 30 new travel agency licences were granted, as well as three tour guide licences and 55 local tour guide certifications. Extensions were also approved for 42 hotel licences, 10 high-standard guesthouse licences, 36 travel agencies, and 84 local tour guides—reflecting both new growth and sustained operations within the region’s tourism infrastructure.
Kawthoung, the region’s primary marine tourism hub, continues to be a major draw for international visitors. Recent figures show 59 foreign yacht arrivals and over 600 same-day tourist excursions, totaling 384 organized trips and 5,686 international tourist arrivals. These statistics underscore the region’s rising profile as a sought-after destination in Southeast Asia.
Acknowledging the importance of sustainable and secure tourism, regional authorities announced that additional protective measures will be implemented, including the establishment of call centres to guard against online fraud and prevent criminal networks from targeting island resorts.
Tourism remains a cornerstone of the Taninthayi Region’s economy, with officials emphasizing plans to balance expansion with robust regulatory oversight, environmental stewardship, and visitor safety.
