Ethiopia’s National Wheat Program Records Significant Production Gains

Addis Ababa, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has stated that Ethiopia’s National Wheat Program is firmly anchored in the goal of transforming the country into a self-sufficient wheat producer. The initiative focuses on increasing agricultural productivity, expanding irrigated wheat cultivation, strengthening national seed systems, and providing targeted support to smallholder farmers across key regions.
According to the Prime Minister, total national wheat production during the first two quarters of the 2018 Ethiopian calendar has already reached 126.69 million quintals, excluding output from irrigated wheat fields. This milestone reflects the growing impact of coordinated efforts under the national program.
Commending the contribution of farmers, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed praised their dedication and encouraged them to maintain the momentum, noting that their efforts are central to achieving long-term food security and agricultural sustainability in Ethiopia.
