Amman International Film Festival Opens Seventh Edition with Focus on Arab Storytelling
Amman, The Gulf Observer: The seventh edition of the Amman International Film Festival – Awal Film officially opened on Sunday evening under the theme “Beyond the Frame,” bringing together filmmakers, artists, diplomats, and cinema enthusiasts to celebrate Arab and international filmmaking.
The opening ceremony, held at the Hussein Cultural Centre in Amman, was attended by HRH Prince Ali, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Royal Film Commission. HRH Princess Rym Ali, President of the festival, inaugurated the event in the presence of HRH Prince Abdullah and HRH Princess Jalilah.
In her opening address, Princess Rym said the theme “Beyond the Frame” encourages audiences to look beyond the screen, where culture, memory, and shared experiences shape the authenticity and unique voice of cinematic works. She stressed the importance of Arab filmmakers reclaiming their own narratives, noting that for too long others have determined which stories are told and which remain unheard.
The ceremony was attended by former Prime Minister Omar Razzaz, Greater Amman Municipality Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh, senior government officials, diplomats, and renowned international film personalities.
A special tribute was paid to the late Palestinian artist Mohammad Bakri, featuring a short documentary highlighting his artistic legacy. His children—Saleh, Adam, and Yafa—joined their mother, Leila, in reading a commemorative message honoring his contributions to Arab cinema and culture.
This year’s festival places a special spotlight on Tunisian cinema, showcasing six distinguished works by Tunisian filmmakers. Presenters Muhanad Jazirah and Zain Awad introduced Jordanian singer Yazan Rousan, who performed “Good Morning Tunisia,” a musical piece blending Jordanian and Tunisian dialects in celebration of the cultural partnership.
Tunisian actor and director Dhafer L’Abidine expressed his appreciation to Jordan and the festival organizers, saying he was honored that his feature film “Sofia” had been selected as the festival’s opening film. Following the ceremony, organizers screened the film, with L’Abidine presenting his work to the audience in person.
Running through August 3, the Amman International Film Festival features a diverse selection of Arab and international films making their Jordanian premieres, alongside panel discussions, seminars, and workshops that bring together filmmakers and industry professionals to exchange ideas and promote regional and global cinematic collaboration.
