South Africa Records Double-Digit Growth in International Tourism During First Half of 2026

Pretoria, The Gulf Observer: South Africa’s tourism sector maintained its strong recovery momentum during the first half of 2026, recording double-digit growth in international visitor arrivals and reinforcing the country’s position as a leading global travel destination.

According to the Department of Tourism, South Africa welcomed 5,584,473 international tourists between January and June 2026, representing a 12.3 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The growth was driven by robust performances across both regional and overseas markets.

Tourist arrivals from the African continent rose by 14.3 percent, while overseas arrivals increased by 5.6 percent, highlighting the country’s continued appeal among international travellers. June also recorded strong growth, with 823,365 international visitors, up 9.8 percent year-on-year. Arrivals from Africa alone climbed by 12.1 percent compared to June 2025.

The United States remained South Africa’s leading overseas source market for the second consecutive month in June, contributing 40,566 visitors during the month.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille attributed the positive performance to the government’s ongoing strategy of diversifying South Africa’s tourism offerings and strengthening partnerships with the tourism industry and international markets. She said the sustained growth reflects increasing global confidence in South Africa as a preferred travel destination.

The latest figures underscore the continued recovery of South Africa’s tourism industry, with authorities expressing optimism that the sector will maintain its upward trajectory through the remainder of 2026, contributing to economic growth, job creation, and increased international connectivity.
