Denmark Assumes Presidency of UN Security Council, Prioritizes Peace, Maritime Security
Copenhagen, The Gulf Observer: Denmark has assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of August, pledging to focus on strengthening international peace and security, promoting international law, and addressing key global challenges through multilateral cooperation.
The presidency of the 15-member Security Council rotates monthly among its members in alphabetical order. As president, Denmark will be responsible for setting the Council’s agenda, chairing meetings, facilitating negotiations, and representing the body in its official engagements throughout August.
According to Denmark’s mission to the United Nations, Copenhagen intends to prioritize discussions on maritime security, the protection of civilians in armed conflict, and strengthening the rules-based international order. Denmark will also oversee deliberations on ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises on the Council’s agenda.
Denmark is serving a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2025–2026, marking the fifth time the Nordic nation has held a seat on the Council. August represents Denmark’s second and final presidency during its current term.
The United Nations Security Council bears primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, with its presidency playing a central role in coordinating meetings, managing negotiations, and responding to emerging global crises.
