Morocco Urges Spain to Accelerate Return of Unaccompanied Minors

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Morocco’s Ministry of Interior has called on Spanish authorities to assume their responsibilities and accelerate procedures for the return of unaccompanied Moroccan minors in Ceuta to their families in Morocco.

The ministry stressed that the return process should safeguard the best interests of the minors while addressing administrative and judicial obstacles that have delayed their repatriation. It also reiterated that combating irregular migration and human trafficking requires coordinated efforts and shared responsibility among all concerned parties.

A ministry spokesperson said effective and balanced cooperation, together with mutual commitment, is essential to addressing the challenges associated with irregular migration. The ministry also highlighted the importance of existing mechanisms for cooperation, describing them as effective based on previous experience and valuable in strengthening field-level interventions.

The Moroccan position follows heightened tensions surrounding irregular migration into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Spanish reports have estimated that between 70,000 and 80,000 people entered the enclave during the mass crossing on July 30, while Morocco’s Interior Ministry assessed that around 40,000 people headed toward Ceuta and more than 1,000 toward Melilla.

Most of those who entered irregularly were subsequently returned to Morocco under an agreement between the two countries aimed at addressing the migration situation. Rabat has maintained that tackling irregular migration should be based on the principle of shared responsibility and continued coordination between the two sides.

The Moroccan Interior Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public order and protecting the safety of people and property, while continuing efforts to combat human trafficking networks.

It said Moroccan authorities would maintain a high level of vigilance and readiness and continue coordinating with relevant partners to address emerging risks in accordance with the law.

The latest call underscores Morocco’s emphasis on coordinated action with Spain to address irregular migration while ensuring that the rights and welfare of unaccompanied minors remain protected.
