Cincinnati, The Gulf Observer: Kazakhstan’s world No. 2 Elena Rybakina advanced to the third round of the Cincinnati Open after defeating American Taylor Townsend in straight sets on Sunday.

Rybakina, the tournament’s second seed, secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory over world No. 94 Townsend in a match that lasted one hour and 19 minutes.

The Kazakh player, who received a first-round bye, produced a solid performance against Townsend, hitting five aces and committing one double fault. She also converted three of four break-point opportunities.

Rybakina will face Poland’s Magdalena Fręch in the third round. Fręch, ranked 41st in the world, advanced after eliminating Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, the 30th seed.

The victory gives Rybakina another opportunity to make a deep run in Cincinnati, where she reached the semifinals last year. She is defending 390 ranking points from her previous campaign.

The Cincinnati Open, officially known as the Western & Southern Open, is a prestigious WTA 1000 tournament held annually in Ohio.

Rybakina entered the tournament after finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek in Toronto and will now look to build momentum in Cincinnati as she continues her campaign on the North American hard-court swing.
