President Tokayev Proposes UN Resolution to Enshrine Key Principles of SCO

Bishkek, The Gulf Observer: President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed adopting a special United Nations General Assembly resolution to enshrine the key principles of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), according to the Akorda press service.

He made the proposal while addressing the continued meeting of the Council of Heads of State of SCO member countries in the SCO Plus format in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek.

President Tokayev commended Kyrgyzstan’s presidency of the SCO, noting that it had developed a substantive agenda under the theme “Together Towards Sustainable Peace, Development and Prosperity.”

He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the Bishkek summit would provide fresh impetus to the organization’s shared objectives and further strengthen the SCO’s role as an important pillar of stability in Eurasia.

The Kazakh president said the SCO’s broader strategic objective should be to contribute to the formation of an international order where the pursuit of power and confrontation are replaced by shared responsibility, joint development and long-term cooperation.

“The long-standing experience of the SCO convincingly demonstrates that the ‘Shanghai Spirit’ is an exemplary model of such interaction on the international stage,” Tokayev said.

He identified equality and consensus as fundamental principles of the organization, describing them as a “gold standard” for effective multilateral cooperation and genuine multilateralism.

“Therefore, I propose enshrining the key principles of the SCO in a special UN General Assembly resolution dedicated to the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace,” President Tokayev said.

The proposal reflects Kazakhstan’s call for strengthening multilateral diplomacy and promoting the principles of equality, consensus, cooperation and peaceful development within the international system.
