Guinea Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara
Conakry, The Gulf Observer: Guinea has reaffirmed its firm and consistent support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, endorsing autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole solution to the regional dispute.
The position was reiterated during the eighth session of the Morocco-Guinea Joint Cooperation Commission in Conakry, co-chaired by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Guinean counterpart, Morissanda Kouyaté.
In his opening remarks, Kouyaté reaffirmed Guinea’s steadfast support for what he described as the “Moroccanness of the Sahara” and Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory.
He further said Guinea supports autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the only solution to the dispute, in line with Morocco’s proposal submitted to the United Nations Security Council.
Bourita welcomed Guinea’s position and expressed Morocco’s appreciation for the West African country’s continued support in regional and international forums. He also highlighted Guinea’s decision to establish a consulate in Dakhla.
The two foreign ministers also reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between Morocco and Guinea across a range of sectors.
Guinea’s reaffirmation comes amid continued diplomatic engagement between Morocco and African countries over the Western Sahara issue. In June, Guinea-Bissau similarly renewed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, including Western Sahara.
