Kazakhstan, WCO Discuss Development of ‘Smart Border’ and Customs Digitalisation

Astana, The Gulf Observer: President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with World Customs Organization (WCO) Secretary General Ian Saunders to discuss the development of a “smart border” and further modernization of customs administration.

During the meeting, Tokayev underscored the importance of cooperation with the WCO in improving Kazakhstan’s customs legislation and enhancing the efficiency of customs administration, according to the Akorda press service.

The Kazakh President highlighted the country’s efforts to strengthen transport connectivity across Eurasia and create favourable conditions for cargo transit. He noted that Kazakhstan is consistently advancing its “smart border” model through the introduction of digital solutions designed to streamline and optimize customs procedures.

Saunders praised the progressive development of cooperation between the WCO and Kazakhstan, noting significant advances in customs administration, the adoption of modern digital technologies and the strengthening of institutional capacity among relevant authorities.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to further developing mutually beneficial cooperation, which has continued for more than three decades. They also exchanged views on global trade challenges and emerging trends.

Particular attention was given to prospects for expanding trade and economic relations and strengthening the transport and logistics potential of Central Asia, areas considered important for enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating international commerce.

Following the meeting, President Tokayev awarded Saunders the Order of Dostyk, II Degree, in recognition of his contribution to strengthening partnership and friendly ties between Kazakhstan and the WCO.
