Algeria, Belgium Hold Sixth Round of Political Consultations in Brussels

Brussels, The Gulf Observer: Secretary-General of Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Lounas Mermans, on Tuesday co-chaired the sixth session of Algerian-Belgian political consultations with his Belgian counterpart, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation, Ms. Thiodora Janssen, in Brussels.

The consultations reviewed the current state of Algerian-Belgian relations across various areas and discussed mechanisms to implement the outcomes of the visit by Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, to Brussels on March 31 and April 1, 2026.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of positive momentum in bilateral relations and focused on ways to further utilize the available potential of both countries to advance cooperation.

During the discussions, the two sides stressed the importance of strengthening economic, investment, trade and technical cooperation to meet their shared ambitions. Particular emphasis was placed on expanding collaboration in energy, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, transportation, port services, healthcare, social security, education and vocational training.

The two delegations also highlighted the importance of advancing trade agreements and encouraging mutually beneficial investments as part of efforts to consolidate and further develop the existing economic partnership between Algeria and Belgium.

The political consultations also provided an opportunity for the two sides to exchange assessments and views on a number of regional and international issues of common interest.

Discussions covered developments in the Middle East, with particular attention to the Palestinian issue, as well as the situation in the Sahel region and the Western Sahara.

The sixth round of consultations reflected the continued engagement between Algeria and Belgium on bilateral cooperation and international and regional developments, with both sides exploring avenues for strengthening their partnership across multiple sectors.
