Turkmenistan Holds Consultation Meeting on International Standards for Reducing Methane Emissions

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: A consultation meeting on international standards and regulations for reducing methane emissions was held on October 1 at the Research Institute of Natural Gas in Ashgabat.
The meeting was organized with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan under the project “European Union for Green Development in Turkmenistan: Policy Dialogue and Climate Action for 2024–2029.” The project is co-financed by the European Union and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany and implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
Representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, relevant ministries and government agencies attended the meeting.
The consultation was aimed at developing recommendations to further improve Turkmenistan’s regulatory and legal framework in the field of methane emissions reduction, taking into account the country’s national development priorities.
Legal and technical specialists from the Mejlis, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, as well as the State Concerns Turkmennebit and Turkmengas, participated in the discussions.
Participants examined an analytical approach to reviewing Turkmenistan’s existing regulatory and legal framework with a view to its further development in line with recognized contemporary international practices. Particular attention was given to relevant international approaches, including the European Union’s regulation on methane emissions reduction in the energy sector.
The consultation provided a methodological foundation for assessing and adapting international best practices to Turkmenistan’s national circumstances, while supporting further efforts to strengthen the country’s regulatory framework for methane emissions reduction.
