Tajikistan Launches Rehabilitation of Vahdat–Obi Garm Road, Advances Roghun Bridge Construction

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: President of Tajikistan and Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon laid the foundation stone for the rehabilitation of the Vahdat–Obi Garm highway during a working visit to the city of Vahdat on October 24, marking another step towards strengthening the country’s transport infrastructure.
The project aims to improve road connectivity, enhance traffic safety, facilitate the movement of vehicles and strengthen economic and trade links between regions.
During his inspection, President Rahmon was briefed that the highway would extend for 70 kilometres, featuring two-way traffic lanes. The carriageway will have a width of 10–12 metres, while the road shoulders will measure 2.5 metres.
The project also предусматривает the construction of pedestrian pathways with a combined length of 16,600 metres, the installation of 1,850 road signs, and the construction of 1,500 metres of protective parapet barriers, alongside other engineering and infrastructure works.
Officials highlighted that the rehabilitation of the Vahdat–Roghun highway would help ensure uninterrupted traffic throughout the year, reduce travel time and fuel consumption during the transportation of goods, and create new employment opportunities.
The road, together with all necessary infrastructure, is scheduled for completion and commissioning within 18 months.
The project is being implemented as part of the Tajik government’s broader efforts to develop transport infrastructure and improve living conditions for the population.
During the visit, President Rahmon also reviewed construction progress on a bridge and connecting roads under Lot 3 of the Obigarm–Nurobod highway project.
The new bridge, which will cross the reservoir of the Roghun Hydropower Plant, will be 920 metres long, while its connecting roads will extend for 1.5 kilometres. Upon completion, the infrastructure is expected to improve traffic flow and transport accessibility along the route.
The president was informed that the bridge comprises eight supports and 78 piles. Drilling and concrete pouring for the piles have been completed, while reinforcement and concrete works on the bridge piers are continuing around the clock.
Construction teams are using the necessary machinery and equipment to ensure that the work is carried out to the required quality standards and completed on schedule. Preparatory work and construction of the connecting roads are also underway.
More than 73 units of heavy construction machinery and equipment, along with over 200 domestic and foreign specialists, have been mobilized for the project.
The construction is being carried out by experienced international construction companies, with financing provided by the Government of Tajikistan and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
The completion of the bridge and connecting roads is expected to improve transport conditions, support regional economic and social development, and strengthen the efficient use of Tajikistan’s transport potential.
Through these infrastructure initiatives, Tajikistan continues to advance its efforts to modernize the national road network, improve regional connectivity and facilitate the movement of people and goods across the country.
