Great Wall

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: In a significant effort to preserve and enhance one of the most iconic landmarks in the world, conservation workers are set to commence a research-based renovation project on part of the Badaling section of the Great Wall later this year. The project, scheduled to start in the spring, will focus on an area spanning over 700 meters in length, aiming to connect and revitalize this crucial portion of the historical structure.

Yu Haikuan, Deputy Director of the Cultural Heritage Protection Department of Yanqing District in northern Beijing, revealed that the research-driven renovation project is part of a broader initiative to ensure the sustained preservation and connectivity of the Badaling Great Wall section. The comprehensive endeavor is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2024, transforming the Badaling Great Wall into a fully connected stretch with a total length exceeding 20 km.

The Badaling scenic area, known for its breathtaking views and historical significance, first opened its gates to tourists in 1958. Since then, it has welcomed over 200 million visitors from both domestic and international origins, making it one of the most visited sections of the Great Wall.

The Great Wall, with a colossal total length of over 20,000 km, spans across 15 provincial-level regions, encompassing diverse landscapes and historical contexts. Yanqing District in Beijing, home to the Badaling section, boasts a significant portion of the Great Wall with a total length of 179.2 km, featuring sections constructed with various materials, including bricks, stones, and earth.

The ongoing conservation project aims not only to preserve the physical structure but also to contribute valuable research and experience that will guide future efforts in protecting and restoring the Great Wall. Yu Haikuan emphasized the importance of this year’s renovation efforts, stating that the knowledge gained will serve as a foundation for the ongoing commitment to safeguarding this cultural marvel for generations to come.

As the spring renovation kicks off, the Badaling Great Wall is poised to undergo a transformation that will not only enhance its structural integrity but also provide visitors with an enriched historical and cultural experience.
