Milli Majlis Speaker Sahiba Gafarova Urges Armenia to Embrace Peace and Normalize Relations
Baku, The Gulf Observer: In a diplomatic appeal made during the 14th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly held in Baku, Milli Majlis Speaker Sahiba Gafarova has called on Armenia to undergo constitutional changes and relinquish territorial claims to Azerbaijan. The remarks were conveyed through a formal address delivered on February 22, as reported by Azerbaijani media.
Speaker Gafarova emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering peaceful relations and extending an olive branch to Armenia based on the fundamental principles of international law. Despite enduring military-political provocations for over three years, Azerbaijan remains open to the prospect of signing a peace agreement with its neighbor.
Gafarova highlighted the recent bilateral meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which took place within the framework of the Munich Security Conference. The Speaker commended the agreements reached during the peace treaty negotiations and discussions on border delimitation, deeming them positive steps towards regional stability.
The Speaker expressed hope that Armenia would abstain from further provocations, eschew the involvement of biased third parties, and renounce its territorial claims outlined in the Armenian Constitution and other legislative acts. Gafarova urged Armenia to engage in direct bilateral negotiations for a comprehensive peace agreement, emphasizing that sustainable peace and stability in the region hinge on establishing neighborly relations founded on the norms and principles of international law.
The call for constitutional changes and territorial relinquishment underscores Azerbaijan’s commitment to diplomatic resolutions and its dedication to building a foundation of lasting peace within the South Caucasus region.
