China and EU Agree to Consult on Anti-Subsidy Investigation into Chinese EVs

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, agreed on Saturday to initiate consultations regarding the European Union’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). The consensus was reached during a video conference between the two officials, according to a press release from the Ministry of Commerce.
On the same day, Minister Wang also met with German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, reiterating China’s position on the investigation. Wang emphasized China’s willingness to address both parties’ reasonable concerns to prevent the escalation of trade frictions in a rational and professional manner. He expressed readiness for dialogue and consultations on the EV issue, provided the EU engages with sincerity.
Wang underscored the significance of the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Germany, highlighting the deep economic interdependence and mutual reliance between the two markets. He urged Germany to play a positive role within the EU, encouraging the European side to meet China halfway.
“If the European side adheres stubbornly to its wrong way, China will take necessary measures, including lodging a case under the World Trade Organization dispute settlement mechanism, to firmly defend its legitimate rights and interests,” Wang stated.
Vice Chancellor Habeck, acknowledging the critical role of both Germany and China in globalization, voiced deep concerns over the EU’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese EVs. He warned that such measures could negatively impact Europe’s green transition and consumer interests. Habeck stressed that imposing tariffs is the worst approach, potentially leading to a vicious spiral of escalating trade frictions. He advocated for dialogue and consultations as the sole means to resolve the issue.
This development marks a significant step towards addressing trade tensions between China and the EU, with both sides expressing a commitment to finding a mutually beneficial solution through dialogue and negotiation.
