Apple to Invest $1 Billion in AirTag Vendor Factory in Indonesia

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Apple Inc. has announced plans to establish an AirTag vendor factory in Batam, Riau Islands, with an initial investment of $1 billion. The announcement was made by Indonesia’s Minister of Investment and Downstreaming, Rosan Roeslani, following his meeting with Apple’s Vice President of Global Policy, Nick Amman, in Jakarta on Tuesday.

“This project marks the first phase of Apple’s significant investment in Indonesia,” Minister Roeslani stated. “They have discussed and are fully committed to this factory, which will pave the way for further vendor investments in the country.”

The factory’s location has been finalized, and construction is set to begin soon, with completion targeted for early 2025. The facility is projected to commence operations by early 2026, creating approximately 2,000 job opportunities.

Apple’s investment also underscores the potential for broader collaboration, as the tech giant plans to encourage other vendors to explore opportunities in Indonesia.

“This investment commitment is a major milestone. Our team will monitor its progress closely to ensure successful implementation,” Roeslani said.

Nick Amman’s visit to Jakarta includes ongoing negotiations with the Indonesian government. These discussions aim to extend the domestic component level (TKDN) certification for Apple products, a requirement for the company to officially market its upcoming iPhone 16 in Indonesia.

The establishment of the AirTag vendor factory signals a significant step in Apple’s expansion in Southeast Asia, while also boosting Indonesia’s reputation as an attractive destination for high-tech investments.
