Azerbaijanis Rally at UN Geneva Office, Urging Action on Landmine Contamination
Geneva, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijanis residing in Switzerland gathered outside the United Nations office in Geneva to raise awareness about the critical issue of landmine contamination in the newly liberated territories. The protest rally, organized by the Cultural Center of Azerbaijanis in Switzerland, aimed to draw attention to the pressing problem and call upon the European and international community to exert pressure on Armenia for the release of detailed maps of minefields in the affected areas.
As part of the protest action, participants conducted a “Mine Field” simulation training, illustrating the dangers faced by civilians in these mined regions. Informational leaflets were distributed to residents, providing detailed insights into Armenia’s mining activities in Azerbaijani territories.
The demonstration emphasized the need for urgent international cooperation to address the issue of landmine contamination promptly and efficiently. The protesters sought support in urging Armenia to fulfill its obligation by providing comprehensive maps, crucial for ensuring the safety of civilians and facilitating demining efforts.
The Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry recently issued a statement in response to information from the Armenian National Security Service regarding a potential delivery of additional landmine maps to Azerbaijan as part of confidence-building measures. The statement stressed the urgency of Armenia providing information on the fates of 4,000 missing Azerbaijanis and disclosing the locations of mass graves where Azerbaijanis have been buried over the last 30 years. The rally at the UN office serves as a reminder that concerted efforts are necessary to address the mine threat and facilitate transparency in the post-conflict region.
