Erdogan Emphasizes Equality in Cyprus Negotiations and Criticizes Greek Defense Minister
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has unequivocally stated that no new negotiation process for Cyprus can commence without both sides on the island engaging as equals. Speaking to reporters on his return flight from an official visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on Sunday, Erdogan highlighted that any fresh negotiations would be contingent on establishing a balance where both parties are treated with parity and leave the table as equals.
Erdogan’s comments followed recent statements by Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, who referred to Turkish presence in Cyprus as an occupation. Describing Dendias’ remarks as “impudent,” Erdogan called upon Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to address and rectify Dendias’ statements. The Turkish President reiterated that Türkiye’s intervention in Cyprus in 1974 was a peacekeeping mission aimed at halting potential genocide and restoring order in accordance with international law.
During the last NATO summit, Erdogan and Mitsotakis had agreed to avoid inflammatory rhetoric in their engagements regarding Cyprus. Erdogan stressed that the Turkish military has a historic record of not oppressing its adversaries and maintaining the rights of the oppressed. He assured that this tradition of upholding peace would persist.
In terms of strategic developments, Erdogan noted that the focus in Northern Cyprus is shifting towards enhancing political infrastructure rather than expanding military bases. He criticized potential Greek Cypriot plans to establish a naval base, warning that such actions could heighten tensions and lead to violations of international law. Erdogan suggested that Türkiye might consider developing its own naval facilities in response if necessary.
Additionally, Erdogan unveiled plans for a new Turkish gas production platform, which he likened to a strategic base, underscoring Türkiye’s commitment to advancing its energy independence. He cautioned against actions that exacerbate tensions on the island and emphasized that alliances with entities involved in conflicts, such as Israel, would not benefit Greece or its interests.
Erdogan’s statements reflect Türkiye’s stance on maintaining a balanced and fair approach to the Cyprus issue while addressing broader regional and strategic concerns.
