Limited Supply of Shan State Muskmelon Amid Decline in Plantation

Hopong, The Gulf Observer: The supply of muskmelon grown in Shan State has been limited due to a decline in plantation, but the trade remains steady. The fruit, known for its unique taste and freshness, is cultivated mainly in Hopong and nearby villages during a single growing season.

Shan State-produced muskmelon is considered superior in flavor compared to the Chinese variety, despite being smaller and having thinner flesh. Ma Nan Kham Thu, a trader specializing in seasonal fruits in Hopong Township, stated, “Muskmelon is one of the most-consumed seasonal fruits. Although the number of farmers growing it has always been limited, Shan muskmelon is fresher and more delicious compared to the Chinese variety, which is larger with thicker flesh. Due to being a single-season crop, the supply isn’t abundant, but the trade remains fine.”

Muskmelon from Shan State has garnered nationwide demand, particularly from major cities like Yangon and Mandalay, with Yangon being the largest buyer.

“Yangon is the biggest buyer. However, the muskmelon season is too short and will end before March,” Ma Nan Kham Thu added.

With the limited supply and short season, traders and consumers alike are urged to make the most of the available stock while it lasts.
