Ilham Aliyev and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Inspect Construction of New Shusha Mosque

Shusha, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited the city of Shusha on Thursday to inspect the ongoing construction of the New Shusha Mosque, a significant architectural and cultural project symbolizing Azerbaijan’s post-liberation heritage.
During the visit, Anar Alakbarov, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, provided a detailed briefing on the progress of the construction. The foundation of the mosque was laid by President Aliyev in 2021, and the project is now over 60 percent complete, with final completion expected next year.
Designed as a modern architectural landmark, the mosque integrates deep symbolic elements reflecting Azerbaijan’s historic victory in the 2020 Second Karabakh War. As per President Aliyev’s vision, the layout of the mosque resembles the number 8, symbolizing Victory Day, marking the liberation of Shusha on November 8. The mosque’s two minarets, each standing 72 meters tall, are shaped to form the number 11, denoting the eleventh month in which both Shusha and Karabakh were liberated.
The mosque is being constructed in the upper part of Shusha, and its exterior will be adorned with geometric patterns inspired by the decorative motifs of Shusha’s historic mosques, thereby preserving the cultural essence of the city while showcasing its modern renaissance.
The New Shusha Mosque project represents a blend of tradition and innovation, reaffirming Shusha’s position as a spiritual, cultural, and architectural hub in the post-conflict restoration of Karabakh.
