Indonesia and Japan Strengthen Strategic Defense Ties with Technology Transfer and Maritime Security Cooperation

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba have agreed to enhance defense cooperation between their nations, focusing on the transfer of defense technology and equipment. The two leaders outlined a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral security ties during a meeting at the Bogor Presidential Palace.

Both leaders agreed to establish a forum for defense practitioners to discuss critical issues related to maritime security, as well as defense equipment and technology transfer. Prime Minister Ishiba emphasized the importance of these discussions, stating, “In our bilateral discussions on security cooperation, we have agreed to create a forum for defense practitioners to address issues related to maritime security, including cooperation on defense equipment and technology transfer.”

As part of their growing defense partnership, Japan will grant Indonesia a high-speed patrol vessel through its official security assistance cooperation framework. Additionally, the Indonesian Coast Guard (Bakamla) has signed an agreement with Japan to receive a grant for the construction of an offshore patrol vessel (OPV) by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. The OPV project will be fully funded by Japan via the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Though the specifics of the main defense equipment technologies involved in the transfer were not disclosed, discussions also touched on the potential joint development of Japan’s Mogami-class frigate.

The bilateral talks, attended by ministers and high-ranking officials from both nations, were part of Prime Minister Ishiba’s state visit to Indonesia. The visit also included a one-on-one meeting between President Prabowo and Prime Minister Ishiba at the presidential office.

These agreements mark a significant step in deepening the defense and security collaboration between Indonesia and Japan, further solidifying their strategic partnership.
