Indonesia Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Forest Governance at UN Forum

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia has reaffirmed its strong commitment to sustainable forest management during the 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF21) held at the UN headquarters in New York, highlighting forest governance as a key pillar of climate action, biodiversity conservation, and long-term economic resilience.
Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, stated on Tuesday that the government under President Prabowo Subianto is intensifying efforts to strengthen forest governance as part of the country’s national development agenda and contribution to global climate mitigation initiatives.
“Under the direction of President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia continues to strengthen forest governance as an inseparable part of global climate action. Forests are not merely resources but the foundation for the sustainability of future generations and the nation’s economic resilience,” Raja said in an official statement received in Jakarta.
The minister noted that Indonesia’s participation in the annual UN forum serves as a strategic platform to present the country’s achievements in preserving forest cover and advancing inclusive, transparent, and accountable forest governance to the international community.
He emphasized that sustainable forest management remains central to Indonesia’s policies, encompassing climate mitigation, biodiversity protection, economic resilience, and broader sustainable development goals.
Raja further underlined Indonesia’s commitment to balancing ecosystem conservation with improving the welfare of communities residing in and around forest areas.
The 21st session of the United Nations Forum on Forests, taking place from May 11 to 15, 2026, has brought together member states to strengthen political commitment and international cooperation on global forest governance.
Director General of Sustainable Forest Management at Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry, Laksmi Wijayanti, said the minister’s participation at the high-level meeting reflected Indonesia’s strategic role as one of the world’s largest tropical forest nations.
“The presence of the Minister of Forestry in New York underscores Indonesia’s strategic position as one of the world’s largest tropical forest nations, consistently standing at the forefront of nature-based solutions to climate change,” Laksmi said.
Indonesia has consistently placed forest governance at the center of its climate diplomacy, while seeking to expand conservation efforts alongside sustainable livelihoods and economic development in forest-dependent regions.
