Kazakhstan Declares National Day of Mourning on September 25 Following Servicemen’s Deaths

Astana, The Gulf Observer; President of Kazakhstan has declared September 25, 2026, a national day of mourning across the country following the deaths of servicemen during naval exercises in the Mangystau region, according to the press service of the Akorda.

The decision follows an incident that occurred on September 24 during naval drills conducted along Kazakhstan’s Caspian Sea coast. According to preliminary information, 19 servicemen were swept into the sea after weather conditions deteriorated sharply and strong winds developed while they were carrying out a combat training mission.

Nine servicemen were confirmed dead, while three were rescued. One of the rescued personnel was hospitalized. Search-and-rescue operations for the remaining servicemen are continuing.

The Head of State expressed deep condolences to the families and relatives of the servicemen who lost their lives during the military exercises and conveyed support to those affected by the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov ordered the establishment of a government commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the servicemen and coordinate relevant measures.

The commission is expected to examine the circumstances of the incident and determine the factors that led to the tragedy.

Authorities continue to conduct search-and-rescue operations in the affected area, with relevant military, emergency and other services involved in the response.
