Lavrov: Russia Will Consider US Proposals but Will Not Make Political Concessions

Moscow, The Gulf Observer: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said Moscow will consider proposals from US presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner but will not make political concessions in negotiations with Washington.
Speaking at a meeting with university graduates entering the diplomatic service for the first time, Lavrov said Russia would assess any proposals presented by the US representatives based on their potential economic and financial benefits.
“We’ll see what they propose. If they propose something that benefits us economically and financially, then why not? But it should not involve any political concessions on our part,” Lavrov said.
He also cautioned against expecting international political circumstances to develop in Russia’s favour, stressing that the country must rely on its own capabilities and resources.
Lavrov referred to what he described as a longstanding tradition in US presidential politics, under which a new administration is not bound by decisions made by its predecessor.
According to the Russian foreign minister, this approach could be used as a negotiating tactic in relations with Moscow while allowing Witkoff and Kushner to continue visiting Russia under President Donald Trump’s administration in pursuit of potential agreements.
Lavrov reiterated that Russia remained open to examining proposals that could deliver tangible economic and financial benefits, while ruling out political concessions as part of such arrangements.
He emphasised that Moscow should maintain an independent approach to international affairs rather than depend on the expectation of favourable geopolitical developments.
