Kazakhstan Ratifies CIS Agreement to Strengthen Radiation Monitoring Data Exchange and Regional Safety Cooperation

Astana, The Gulf Observer: Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed into law the ratification of the Agreement on Interaction of member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the exchange of radiation monitoring data, according to the Akorda press service.
The law formalizes Kazakhstan’s participation in a multilateral framework aimed at enhancing cooperation among CIS countries in the field of nuclear and radiation safety. The full text of the law is set to be officially published in the national press.
The agreement, originally signed on June 8, 2023, in Sochi, establishes mechanisms for the exchange, analysis, and forecasting of radiation monitoring data among member states.
Under the agreement, authorized bodies of participating countries will ensure the systematic exchange of monitoring data, guarantee the reliability of transmitted information, and provide advance notification in case of disruptions due to unforeseen circumstances. The use of shared data will be strictly limited to purposes outlined within the agreement.
The document specifies that the cooperation applies exclusively to data derived from state radiation monitoring systems and does not cover information related to the monitoring of nuclear energy facilities.
Furthermore, a unified procedure for data exchange will be developed and approved by the CIS Commission on the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy. This procedure will define the scope, formats, timelines, and archiving protocols for data transmission, as well as establish rules for communication between authorized bodies.
Officials noted that the ratification of the agreement is expected to significantly enhance regional nuclear and radiation safety while strengthening coordination and information-sharing among CIS member states.
