President Prabowo Confers National Hero Title on Former President Soeharto and Nine Other Figures

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Prabowo Subianto on Monday conferred the prestigious title of National Hero upon Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto (1921–2008), during a solemn ceremony at the State Palace in Jakarta.
The honor was received by Soeharto’s eldest daughter, Siti Hardijanti Rukmana, popularly known as Tutut, who attended the ceremony as his heir, accompanied by her younger brother Bambang Trihatmodjo. The event was broadcast live by the Presidential Secretariat.
The conferment was made under Presidential Decree No. 116/TK/2025 on the Awarding of the Title of National Hero, recognizing Soeharto’s contributions to Indonesia’s armed struggle and political development.
As Deputy Commander of the People’s Security Agency (Badan Keamanan Rakyat, BKR) in Yogyakarta, General Soeharto was credited with leading the disarmament of Japanese troops in Kota Baru in 1945 — a significant act that strengthened Indonesia’s defense during the early years of independence.
Alongside Soeharto, nine other distinguished figures were posthumously granted the title of National Hero in commemoration of National Heroes Day 2025. They include:
- Abdurrahman Wahid (1940–2009) – for his contributions to political struggle and Islamic education.
- Marsinah (1969–1993) – for her dedication to social and humanitarian causes.
- Mochtar Kusumaatmadja (1929–2021) – for his achievements in law and politics.
- Rahmah El Yunusiyyah (1900–1969) – for her pioneering efforts in Islamic education.
- Syaikona Muhammad Kholil (1820–1925) – for his leadership in Islamic education.
- Gen. (Ret.) Sarwo Edhie Wibowo (1925–1989) – for his role in Indonesia’s armed struggle.
- Tuan Rondahaim Saragih (1828–1891) – for his contribution to the armed struggle.
- Sultan Muhammad Salahuddin (1889–1951) – for his efforts in education and diplomacy.
- Zainal Abidin Syah (1912–1967) – for his service in political struggle and diplomacy.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of plaques and certificates of conferment to the heirs of the awardees. It was attended by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, members of the Red and White Cabinet, and families of the newly honored heroes.
In his remarks, President Prabowo expressed hope that the recognition of these national figures would serve as an enduring inspiration for future generations to emulate their courage, integrity, and dedication to the nation’s progress.
This year’s ceremony marks the first conferment of the National Hero title since November 8, 2023, when former president Joko Widodo last bestowed the honor on distinguished Indonesians.
