President Tokayev Casts Vote in National Referendum on Nuclear Power Plant

Astana, The Gulf Observer: President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev participated in Kazakhstan’s nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) today. Following his vote, he addressed the media, emphasizing the significance of the referendum and reflecting on the government’s performance over the past seven months.

Responding to a question about potential changes in the government following the referendum, President Tokayev reaffirmed his satisfaction with the government’s efforts.

“In my opinion, the Government is working actively and diligently. It is fulfilling the tasks set by me as the Head of State. We have very intense work, which may not always be visible to the media,” he remarked. The President added that he closely monitors developments in the country and regularly addresses shortcomings within the government and its ministers.

However, he pointed out that seven months is a relatively short period for government officials to fully demonstrate their capabilities, and stressed that the government’s main priority is to identify sources of economic growth for Kazakhstan. “The members of the government need time to prove themselves. The main task is to find sources of economic growth in our country,” Tokayev emphasized.

At the conclusion of the press briefing, the President extended his appreciation to journalists, announcing the establishment of a housing fund that will assist journalists in obtaining housing starting next year.

Kazakh citizens across the country are heading to the polls today to participate in the national referendum, which will determine the future of the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan. The referendum date was set for October 6, 2024, by President Tokayev, who signed a decree on September 2, 2024, formalizing its holding.

In preparation for the referendum, a press conference was held at the Central Election Commission, where officials provided detailed explanations on the procedures. At the II Republican Forum of Deputies of Maslikhats of all levels on October 3, President Tokayev emphasized the significance of the referendum, noting that the outcome would be a turning point for Kazakhstan’s energy policy, regardless of the result.

The decision to hold a referendum on the nuclear power plant reflects the government’s commitment to involving the public in shaping the future of the country’s energy strategy.
