Omani Delegation Visits UNICEF Global Supply and Logistics Hub in Copenhagen
Muscat, The Gulf Observer: A high-level delegation from the Sultanate of Oman visited UNICEF’s Global Supply and Logistics Hub in Copenhagen on Sunday, marking a significant step in strengthening humanitarian cooperation between Oman and UNICEF. The visit aimed to bolster collaborative efforts in delivering essential aid to children in crisis-stricken regions worldwide.
The Omani delegation included representatives from the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Education, the Children First Association, the Oman Charitable Organisation, Dar Al-Atta, and the private sector. The visit provided a comprehensive overview of UNICEF’s exceptional procurement and delivery operations in some of the world’s most challenging environments, strategically aligned with Oman’s recent contribution to UNICEF’s Gaza appeal.
The delegation had the opportunity to witness firsthand the critical role played by UNICEF’s Supply Division in delivering life-saving supplies to children globally. They were briefed on the division’s extensive operations, which in 2023 alone facilitated the procurement of $5.2 billion worth of essential goods and services, benefiting children in 162 countries. As part of its 2023 operations and continuing into 2024, UNICEF’s Supply Division has delivered over $270 million in supplies to assist children and families in Gaza and Sudan.
HH Dr. Sayyida Muna Al Said, Chairperson of the Children First Association, reflected on the visit, stating: “Our visit to Copenhagen has been truly enlightening. We witnessed firsthand UNICEF’s cutting-edge facilities and innovative approaches, especially those that cater to the needs of children with disabilities. This aligns closely with Oman Vision 2040, where the health, education, and overall well-being of our children are central to our nation’s progress.”
During the three-day visit, the Omani delegation toured UNICEF’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the fully automated High Bay storage area, a 24-metre-high structure capable of holding up to 36,000 pallets of essential supplies. Equipped with eight robots, this facility ensures efficient handling and rapid response capabilities, which are vital in times of crisis.
The delegation also explored UNICEF’s Innovation Hub, showcasing cutting-edge research and assistive technologies designed to support children with disabilities. These innovations are integral to UNICEF’s ongoing efforts to ensure that no child is left behind in humanitarian responses.
Leila Pakkala, Director of UNICEF’s Supply Division, expressed her gratitude for Oman’s collaboration, stating: “Children are at the heart of UNICEF’s supply work. We extend our sincere gratitude for the strong cooperation and partnership between the Government of Oman and UNICEF for children in the most urgent need.”
This visit underscores Oman’s ongoing commitment to global humanitarian efforts and aligns with its vision of promoting child welfare and development both at home and abroad.
