Russia’s Ambassador Discusses Investment Opportunities in Myanmar’s Tanintharyi Region

Yangon, The Gulf Observer: Russia’s Ambassador to Myanmar, Iskander Azizov, met with senior junta officials on Tuesday to discuss the stalled Dawei Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and explore new investment opportunities, according to state media reports.
The ambassador held talks with Myat Ko, the regime-appointed chief minister of Tanintharyi Region, and Aung Soe, the chair of the Dawei SEZ Management Committee. While details of the discussions were not disclosed, the meetings reportedly included dialogue on potential investments in the region’s tourism sector, particularly the Mergui Archipelago, a collection of islands known for their pristine beauty.
The Dawei SEZ, however, appeared to be the primary focus of the talks. This multibillion-dollar project, centered on the development of a deep-sea port north of the regional capital, Dawei, has been stalled for over a decade due to financing challenges.
The renewed discussions signal Myanmar’s interest in reviving the long-delayed project, which holds significant economic and strategic potential. The SEZ aims to transform the region into a key trade and logistics hub, enhancing connectivity between Southeast Asia and other markets.
The talks highlight ongoing efforts to attract foreign investment amid Myanmar’s political and economic challenges.
