Rybakina Reaches Toronto WTA 1000 Quarterfinals After Defeating Samsonova

Toronto, The Gulf Observer: Kazakhstan’s top-ranked women’s singles player Elena Rybakina has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Toronto after overcoming Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in a closely contested round-of-16 encounter.

Rybakina, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, secured a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Samsonova, ranked 55th in the world, in a match that lasted two hours and 55 minutes.

The Kazakh player produced a strong serving performance, registering 11 aces during the contest. She also recorded six double faults and converted seven of the 17 break-point opportunities she created.

The victory places Rybakina in the last eight of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament and keeps her campaign in Toronto on course for a deep run.

In the quarterfinals, Rybakina will meet the winner of the round-of-16 clash between Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, ranked 34th in the world, and Japan’s Naomi Osaka, ranked 13th.

Rybakina’s progression adds to a strong period for Kazakhstan’s women’s tennis, with fellow Kazakh player Sonja Zhienbayeva recently securing the first W75 Ourense title of her career in Spain.

The National Bank Open is being held on hard courts in Toronto and is part of the WTA 1000 series, one of the highest tiers of competition on the women’s professional tennis calendar.
