Senegal Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Senegal has reaffirmed its steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over Western Sahara, officials announced following sessions of the High Commission for Moroccan-Senegalese Cooperation. The meetings were co-chaired by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
In a joint statement released on Monday, Senegal reiterated its full backing for Morocco’s autonomy plan in Western Sahara, describing it as the “only credible, serious, and realistic solution” to the regional dispute, to be pursued exclusively within the framework of the United Nations.
The Senegalese delegation also welcomed the historic adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025. The resolution formally recognizes Morocco’s proposed autonomy plan as the sole serious, credible, and sustainable basis for achieving a political solution to the Western Sahara dispute, under Morocco’s sovereignty.
The declaration highlights the strengthening of diplomatic and cooperative ties between Morocco and Senegal and reflects a shared commitment to regional stability and the resolution of long-standing territorial disputes through dialogue and international law.
During the sessions, Prime Ministers Akhannouch and Sonko emphasized the commitment of both nations to enhance cooperation across a broad range of sectors. They underscored shared values of brotherhood, solidarity, and mutual respect, noting the contributions of Moroccan and Senegalese communities residing in each other’s countries as a testament to enduring ties.
The meetings also provided a platform to explore new avenues for collaboration in diplomacy, trade, culture, and development. The session concluded with the adoption of a joint statement and the signing of multiple agreements, memorandums of understanding, and cooperation protocols, further cementing bilateral relations.
